Cyber crime is an illegal act committed using a computer or a computer network such as the Internet.
There are three types of situations in which a cyber crime can be committed and there are therefore three different types of potential cyber criminals :
1. The incidental cyber criminal commits the cyber crime with malicious intent;
2. The accidental cyber criminal finds himself unwittingly within a cyber crime;
3. The situational cyber criminal is forced to commit such action because of the particular situations he is experiencing.
Institutions, corporate and private individuals can all become victims of cyber crime.
But who deals with such crimes? First of all the police, thanks to a team made of skilled and specifically trained experts.
BAccording to the data published in the Annual Report of the Istat (Central Statistics Institute) on internet users, the otential victims of computer crimes are only in Italy 9 millions.
The biggest danger is run by enterprises, since they are subjected to the two major case studies : insider and outsider attacks.
Within the first case study we include those situations ranging from the employee seeking revenge on the company thet has fired him to corporate espionage.
Within the second case study we include password theft, the block of other corporate IT systems, taking websites offline, attacks such as the Denial of Service, mail bombimg and spamming.
Moreover, IT professionals, firms' computer security staff and private investigators are included among those who cooperate with the police in order to stop the diffusion of this phenomenon.
Unfortunately, such cooperation between the police and other subjects is not always compatible, often because of the law.
